SuperCap Inrush Assist Module (SIAM)

Role: End‑to‑end design, development, testing, and revision

Skills Demonstrated: Power electronics, embedded design, PCB development, system integration, firmware‑driven control.

Engineering has always been more than a profession for me — it’s a space where curiosity and creativity naturally take over. Although my current professional responsibilities lie in a different engineering discipline, my strongest technical abilities and long‑term aspirations are rooted in embedded systems and electronics design. This project is a reflection of that passion.

Project Overview:

The SuperCap Inrush Assist Module (SIAM) is a custom‑designed circuit that provides the desired ,over 30A transient inrush current during system startup. This ensures that high‑demand loads receive the necessary energy burst without triggering overload protection on the primary 10A power supply.

Key Features

  • Supercapacitor‑based inrush assistance for high‑current startup loads

  • Primary power supply protection by preventing power supply overload trips

  • Controlled current delivery with safe transient handling

  • Compact, revision‑optimized PCB design

Integrated Subsystem: USB‑Controlled Relay Module

The board also incorporates a 16‑channel SPDT relay controller, operated through a custom GUI over USB using an RS‑232 protocol.
This subsystem demonstrates:

  • Firmware‑driven control

  • Serial communication implementation

  • Multi‑channel switching logic

  • User‑friendly interface design

Development Journey

The project went through multiple iterations, with the third revision achieving the performance, stability, and reliability I aimed for. Each revision involved:

  • Schematic refinement

  • PCB layout optimization

  • Firmware adjustments

  • Bench testing and transient analysis

Why This Project Matters

It represents the type of engineering work where I can apply my full skill set — combining electronics, firmware, debugging, and system‑level thinking. These are the areas where I deliver the most value and where I aim to grow my career further.
